Description
“Quiet, effortless movement.” That’s how Peggy Gale Fleming remembers her first experience with ice skating at the age of nine. Combining her athletic ability with her training in ballet, she began to bring a new sense of grace and elegance to ladies figure skating.
By the time she represented the United States at the 1968 Olympic Games in Grenoble, France, Peggy Fleming held five national titles and three world titles. That year, the Winter Games were being telecast “live” and in color for the first time, and the world was captivated by the apparent ease with which she executed a difficult free-skating program – complete with her signature spins.
Peggy Fleming continues to influence figure skating today, both as a role model and commentator whose love for the sport shines through, effortlessly.
