Rebounding from engine trouble and a 43rd-place finish at Daytona in February, Stewart took the checkered flag 3 weeks later at the MBNA America 500 in Atlanta. It was the first of his three impressive victories in 2002. He also raced to 18 other top 10 finishes – and it was only his fourth year as a NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver.
